Two deaths linked to chikungunya have been confirmed in Réunion. The virus, transmitted by tiger mosquitoes, is resurfacing. Symptoms, prevention, and at-risk individuals: we explain everything you need to know to stay protected against this rapidly increasing epidemic.

Chikungunya in Reunion Island: alert issued, two deaths confirmed

Reunion Island is facing a worrying resurgence of chikungunya. Two elderly people, aged 86 and 96, have sadly succumbed to this mosquito-borne virus. One of them already suffered from comorbidities, which undoubtedly worsened their condition. This is the first time since the start of this new wave that deaths have been officially recorded.

So… should we be worried? Spoiler alert: a little, yes!

Return of the killer mosquito: what you need to know

Does chikungunya ring a bell? This exotic-sounding name is far from new. In 2005-2006, the island already experienced a massive epidemic. This time, the virus is resurfacing more discreetly but with very real consequences. We thought it had disappeared over the years, but it’s back, carried by tiger mosquitoes, always ready to bite at the right (or rather, the wrong) moment.

Why now?

Tropical climate, heavy rains, heat… a winning combination for mosquitoes. Add to that an elderly and vulnerable local population, and you have the perfect recipe for a health crisis.

According to authorities, the virus is spreading more rapidly. While the majority of cases remain mild, severe forms are definitely occurring—particularly among the elderly and those with underlying health conditions.

Symptoms to watch for

There’s no need to become paranoid, but a little vigilance never hurts. Here are the warning signs of chikungunya:

• Sudden and intense fever

• Debilitating joint pain (to the point of walking like a penguin, yes indeed)

• Persistent fatigue

• Sometimes: skin rashes, headaches, nausea…

What you can do (even from the mainland)

It can’t be stressed enough: prevention is key!

• Eliminate stagnant water, these veritable breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

• Use insect repellent, especially in Réunion or when traveling in the tropics.

• Wear long clothing (yes, even if it’s hot).
